Season 14 – Week 2 Picks
Greetings high rollers!
Week 1 is in the books for Skeeson 14 and, as Duke alluded to in the skeemail, there were some interesting developments on Thursday. Most notably, defending MVSkee and individual champ Pat “Alan” Bassett struggled with a 359 on lane 1, his lowest total since a 361 in week 8 of skeeson 12 [Editor’s Note: great stat]. I understand that most rollers would love to struggle and roll 359, it’s just that SkeeBOSTON has become used to watching Alan easily surpass 400 on a weekly basis. So you’re telling me there’s a chance?
I heard the new and improved lane 1 also got the best of last skeeson’s #5 roller, Scott Sinclair, who managed just a 349 [Editor’s Note: I think he hit the craft beer to hard pre-gaming last week]. There is a long way to go between now and the playoffs, but not a strong start for these veterans. On the other hand, John “Everything is” Dawson, came roaring out of the gates with a 457 on the back of 23 hundos. We might need to pump the breaks a little bit here as Dawson came out hot in the first half of skeeson 13 as well, only to limp into the playoffs eight weeks later. But another strong start for him regardless. All told, six rollers cracked the 400 mark in week 1, and I expect we’ll see that total move higher throughout the skeeson.
Six teams cracked the 1000 point barrier in week 1, while just two cracked the 1100 point mark – Ain’t Easy Being Skeezy (1137) and FKA Daddy (1105), formerly Who’s Your Daddy (I have no idea what the name change refers to but I’m curious to find out) – kudos to Brian Aldridge for knocking down 26 hundos last week in leading his squad.
Unfortunately I found out the hard way that picking these matchups isn’t as easy as it looks! I’m off to a 1-3 start so far [Editor’s Note: I suckered you into a couple of those ;)]. Why only 4 games total? Well, as I foreshadowed last week, Boccskee is a coin flip to show up on any given week, and their opponents Beer! also DNR’ed. Let’s skee if we can do a little better this week.
6:30: Can’t Skee Straight (-50) vs. Charlie Doesn’t Skee – I have no idea about either of these two teams. Can’t Skee Straight had a bye in week 1, and the three members of Charlie Doesn’t Skee are listed as Mike Gallo, #2, and #3 [Editor’s Note: updated the stats after you picked, sucker]. Who does number two work for? Makes me wonder how Duke even came up with an appropriate spread….I’ll take the favorites Can’t Skee Straight here.
7:30: Magically Skeelicious (-225) vs. Skeese Pizza – Something tells me Duke put a little too much emphasis on a bad week 1 for Skeese Pizza, who apparently also fell victim to lane 1. Magic the Gathering – Jan, Ryan, and Wes – are due for an improvement over last week, but the pizza-loving ladies – Ashley, Ida, Jaime – are due for a bounce back so I have to take the massive points in this matchup.
8:30: Duke I am Your Father (-55) vs. Why So Skeerious – Gotta give credit to Duke I am Your Father, which could be an early frontrunner for team name and costume of the year (yes, there are trophies for those!!). Not to mention that Everett (off a team title last skeeson) and his new skeemates – Jen and Neil – almost cracked 1000 last week. But don’t sleep on the boys of Skeerious, as they’ve been known to have a trick or two up their sleeve. With that in mind, I prefer Skeerious taking the points.
9:30: Han Rolo vs. Ain’t Easy Being Skeezy (-40) – Another veteran with new skeemates is Steve “Pinball” Robinson of Han Rolo, though veterans Cory (won the team title with Everett last skeeson) and Nate are far from rookskees at this point. These guys were one of the six to crack 1000 points last week. In steps Eric, Lindsay, and Ray of Skeezy fresh off the top score from week 1 and off to a good start in the chase for the team title. I’m going to go with my second team favored against the spread this week and take Skeezy giving the points.
10:30: Skeeing is Believing vs. FKA Daddy (-25) – This might be the match of the night with playoff implications as FKA Daddy are fresh off their 1100 point week 1. They face off against last skeeson’s #2 team in Ben, Eric, and Marissa. Skeeing is coming off a bye in week 1 so they might be a little rusty in this match, so I’ll give the edge to FKA Daddy in a close matchup.
Week 1: 1-3
Skeeson 14 to date: 1-3
Skee you on the lanes!!
